Up for auction is a old vintage lot of 2 full size German violins for restoration. The lightly figured 2 pc. curly maple back violin on the left measures 14 1/8 by 8 1/8 inches. The violin is labelled

 

This instrument is 37" long overall and 12 1/2" wide at it's greatest point. It bears the name "d'Orso just below the bridge. There is a with the grain split on the top and a split stave on the back.

 

I am anything but an expert on drum construction, but if I had to guess I'd say that this drum, which is dated 1784 beneath the monogram denoting, presumably, its original owner (see my 2nd picture),
