This is a matched set of 26 African trade beads from the mid-late-1800s or so.  Used by European traders who bought them in Venice, Italy, to barter for gold, ivory, palm oil and the like.  They are

 

These wonderful strands of small whiteheart beads were purchased in Mali during our stint there in the early 1990s.  There are more some 800 beads in total, almost all in pristine condition.
